Bird Kin

What if, from childhood, you grew up with an animal species you were connected to for life?

Ravens (for Margit)

This is the reality Donna Haraway imagines in her book Staying with the Trouble. Where every person is connected to a species, a creature they grow with, protect, and resemble over time.

I explored this idea in Bird Kin, a project that began during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was a way to stay connected to myself, to others, and to the natural world. Human systems felt unsafe at the time, the birds on the other hand seemed full of instruction.

What started as a personal exploration became something shared, many people commission paintings, each bird tied to someone’s story, someone’s family. The project became a source of joy during a difficult time.
